About Voice Assessments

If you’re struggling with your singing and you need some expert advice to improve your technique and vocal health, a voice assessment is the perfect first step.

I offer a personalised video review, which provides a diagnostic assessment of your singing. It is designed for singers who want professional insight into their voice, technique and vocal habits.

This will to give you clarity, direction, and a tailored plan based on your unique voice.

Read more below to find out how it works.

How it Works

We like to keep it as simple as possible at KarensVocals.

  • Create a voice recording or video of your singing.
  • Contact me via the contact page and let me know if it is a video or voice clip and how long it is.
  • I will respond to you via email with simple instructions on how to upload the video for me to review.
  • After this you will be in direct contact with me via email.
  • I’ll assess your voice and create a video with the assessment feedback.
  • Then I will contact you via email to share your assessment feedback video with you.

What to expect

Your assessment is structured to give you immediate value and a clear way forward. Here’s what to expect in the assessment feedback video:

  • I’ll provide honest, constructive feedback on your strengths and areas that need attention, including any vocal health concerns I may notice.
  • If required for your case, I will provide exercises that you can start using to improve.
  • If coaching is required I will make suggestions on what coaching is required and on how to move forward.
  • There are no obligations whatsoever to take lessons with me.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What song to choose.

Pick something you’re comfortable with. This isn’t an audition, so choose a piece you enjoy and know well.
Stay within your current vocal range. The goal is to showcase your voice, not to push it to extremes.
Keep it simple if you’re unsure. A well-sung, simple piece is more useful for assessment than something overly challenging or unfamiliar.

How to record voice or video

You can use your phone, iPad, desktop PC or other recording equipment to record your song.

Most devices already have apps to record video and sound with. If not, then search for one and download it.

Better sound quality allows me to hear your voice better, resulting in a better assessment.

Tip: Listen to the sound quality of your recording using headphones or ear pods to ensure it is clear, loud enough and not distorted.

What genres does the assessment apply to?

A vocal assessment at KarensVocals is relevant to all genres. While I specialise in classical, opera, musical theatre, and contemporary music, the purpose of an assessment is to evaluate your voice in a way that supports your chosen style.

Whether you sing pop, jazz, gospel, or rock, the focus will be on understanding your voice as it naturally presents in that genre and identifying how to improve technique, expression, and vocal health within your stylistic context.

Countries and languages?

I’m based in Cape Town, South Africa, which places me in a convenient time zone for many regions, including:

Western and Eastern Europe
Nordic countries
Most of Africa

If you’re located elsewhere, you’re still very welcome to book a voice discovery session, as long as there’s a suitable time slot available on the booking form that aligns with your availability.

I speak English and Afrikaans fluently, and I can guide you through singing in Italian, French, and German, particularly for classical and operatic repertoire. You don’t need to speak these languages, I’ll help you with pronunciation, meaning, and stylistic delivery during the session.
