What to Expect in a Lesson

Each singing lesson is carefully tailored to your voice, ensuring a personalised approach that brings out the best in your unique sound and vocal style.

We’ll begin with a gentle vocal warm-up to prepare your voice and body. From there, we’ll focus on building strong vocal techniques, like breath support, pitch accuracy, and tone clarity, that are essential for healthy, powerful singing.

In the second part of the session, we’ll turn our attention to developing your repertoire and refining your vocal performance. Over time, we’ll also work on stage presence and building your confidence as a singer.

Together, we’ll explore, strengthen, and master your voice while uncovering its unique character. With practical guidance on vocal projection, control, and expression, you’ll learn how to deliver performances that truly connect with your audience.

My lessons offer a supportive and encouraging environment where you can safely grow at your own pace. Let’s unlock the full potential of your voice so that you can shine with every note you sing!

Who Are My Lessons For

My lessons are suitable for everyone from beginners to experienced and professional singers. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine specific aspects of your technique, each lesson is carefully tailored to your level and vocal goals.

I regularly work with performers preparing for auditions, competitions, and shows, helping them refine their skills and perform with confidence at their highest level.

What Methods Is the Vocal Coaching Based On

My coaching is based on the Italian Bel Canto method, a classical technique renowned for its elegance, expression, and technical precision. Bel Canto, meaning “beautiful singing”, originated in Italy between the 17th and 19th centuries and is widely regarded as the golden standard for vocal technique and artistry.

Over the years, I’ve developed my own unique approach to teaching that builds on this foundation. My method blends the core principles of Bel Canto with modern vocal science and real-world performance insight, making it highly effective across a range of genres and voice types.

What Singing Techniques Are Taught

In my lessons, I focus on a comprehensive range of vocal techniques designed to strengthen and support your voice, no matter your experience level. Each technique is introduced at the right time for your vocal development, ensuring healthy progress and long-term improvement.

Here are some of the key areas we cover:

  • Breathing Techniques & Breath Support
Learn the most effective ways to breathe for singing, helping you maintain control and stamina throughout your performances.
  • Vocal Placement & Projection
Develop the ability to project your voice clearly and confidently, without strain, using optimal vocal placement.
  • Range Expansion & Register Blending
Work on extending your range, smoothing the transitions between chest, middle, and head voice, and establishing a strong, confident high register.
  • Posture & Vocal Support
Discover how physical alignment and posture directly affect your sound, and how to engage your body for maximum vocal efficiency.
  • Advanced Vocal Techniques
Refine your tone, agility, and dynamics with training on the best vocal methods tailored to your needs and style.
  • Vocal Health & Injury Recovery
I can help identify signs of vocal strain or damage and guide you through exercises that support vocal healing and restoration.

What Qualifies Me to Be Your Vocal Coach

When you take lessons with me, you’re working with a teacher who brings together a strong foundation of academic training, performance experience, and over two decades of vocal coaching expertise.

Academic Qualifications

I hold a Performer’s Diploma in Opera from the University of Cape Town, where I received intensive classical vocal training. I also have an Honours degree in Psychology Cum Laude  from UNISA (the University of South Africa), which has deepened my understanding of how mindset, confidence, and emotional awareness play a role in vocal development.

Classical Training

I studied under Prof. Angelo Gobatto, then Director of Opera at UCT, and was privileged to train with Prof. Virginia Davids, one of the world’s most respected vocal teachers. Under her guidance, I learned the Italian Bel Canto technique, a timeless and elegant singing style that continues to inform my teaching today, something I’m extremely proud to pass on to my students.

Vocal Coaching Experience

With more than twenty years of vocal coaching experience, I’ve taught at a range of South African high schools, run a successful private coaching studio, and currently serve as a vocal coach at LAMTA, one of South Africa’s top Musical Theatre academies. I bring a practical, nurturing, and performance-ready approach to every lesson.

Performance Experience

I’ve had the joy of performing in numerous productions over the years, each of which has deepened my understanding of vocal expression, stage presence, and the discipline required for professional singing.

I began entering and winning singing competitions and eisteddfods in my teenage years. While studying opera at university, I was awarded the Friends of the Nico bursary for the Most Promising Young Soloist.

My operatic performance experience includes roles in Bastien & Bastienne and The Marriage of Figaro, among other local productions. In 2000, I was honoured to win the Wendy Fine Singing Competition.

As a soprano soloist, I’ve performed in several major oratorios, including Handel’s Messiah and Orff’s Carmina Burana. I was also one of the featured soloists at the annual Caltex Festival in Cape Town, performing to an audience of over 24,000 people.

A definite highlight of my career was being part of the CATS company in 2000, which gave me the opportunity to tour internationally to countries such as Beirut and Malaysia, an unforgettable experience that broadened my perspective as both a performer and a teacher.

What Genres Do My Online Vocal Coaching Lessons Cover

I specialise in classical, opera, contemporary music, and musical theatre. However, my teaching approach is based on strengthening and developing your natural voice, so it applies to any genre.

Whether you sing pop, jazz, folk, or gospel, the vocal techniques I teach will help you sing more freely, expressively, and with greater control—regardless of your style.
