Have you ever said, “I wish I could sing but I’m too old to start now”?
If so, you’re not alone. Many people believe that unless you start voice lessons at a young age, singing is out of reach. But I’m here to tell you that couldn’t be further from the truth.
In fact, some of my most dedicated and successful students started their vocal journeys in their 30s, 40s, 50s. Whether you want to sing for your own enjoyment, on a stage, or simply enjoy your voice again, here’s the truth.
Your Voice is a Muscle, Not a Mystery
Singing is not some magical gift reserved for the chosen few. Your voice is a set of muscles, resonators, breath, and coordination, all of which can be trained and improved with guidance and practice. Just like someone can start yoga or piano at any age, you can learn to sing.
Age Has Its Advantages
In fact, starting to sing later in life comes with a few great advantages.
- Emotional maturity: You are able to connect more deeply with the music you sing because of your unique life experience.
- Discipline: Adults often practice more consistently and in a more dedicated way.
- Clarity: You’re likely more clear about your personal goals and wanting to learn because you want to, not because someone else is pushing you.
- Confidence: You may care less about what others think and more about how it feels.
- Storytelling ability: A big part of singing is to have the ability to tell a story. This is much easier for more mature singers, because of their life history that they can reflect on and portray through the songs they sing.
Your Voice Remains Adaptable Throughout Life
Scientific evidence supports that it is never too late to learn to sing. While the vocal cords change with age, some physical aspects may be more easily trained at a younger age. With consistent vocal training your voice can improve in range, control, and tone. Neuroplasticity research shows the brain can form new neural pathways at any age, meaning adults can learn new musical techniques and concepts.
What You Need and Don’t need
You don’t need to have perfect pitch, a powerful sound or years of music training. All you need to have is curiosity, a willingness to learn, a vocal coach who understands your needs, and some time to practice so that you start experiencing results soon.
Stop doubting your voice
People often wrongly believe that they have a bad or ugly voice. I spend a lot of time trying to convince people that they have their own unique voice and that there’s no such thing as a bad voice. They might not be sounding that great because they may have a lot of vocal tension, a tired, overused speaking voice, which can be corrected with practice and the right techniques. Your voice deserves to be heard and nurtured.
