Vocal Warm-Ups vs. Technical Training

Understanding the Difference: Vocal Warm-Ups vs. Technical Training.

Every singer needs to know the difference between vocal warm-ups and technical training to maximize their practice sessions.

Your vocal warm up does not count as technical training

Over the years many of my students have asked me whether their warm up can be regarded as technical training – my answer to that is NO!

What is the difference between Vocal Warm-ups and Technical Training

A vocal warm-up is like stretching before exercise, it gently prepares your voice for the demands ahead by increasing blood flow, loosening tension, and easing into your vocal range. Think humming, lip trills, and light scales to “wake up” your voice and prevent strain.

In contrast, technical training is where the magic of skill-building happens. It’s about refining breath control, mastering resonance, and developing agility, which are essential tools for achieving long-term growth and performance-ready technique. Warm-ups set the stage, while technical training pushes boundaries and builds artistry. By understanding and applying both, singers can protect their voices while reaching new heights in their vocal journey.

More about vocal warm-ups

When you are warming up you want to get into your resonance, the way your voice is ringing, which is linked to where you are placing your voice. These are some exercises you can do and how they help your voice to warm up:

  • Humming: You always start with humming, as it is the most gentle way of getting your voice forward. You will start with 2 notes and progress to 3 or more, first going up and down in a scale, and in different interval combinations.

  • Lip and tongue trills: Also increasing and decreasing your pitch while trilling with your tongue and lips. This helps with warming up your tongue and the muscles in your mouth
  • Singing scales using different vowels: This helps to bring flexibility and agility to the voice as part of the warm up.

More about technical training

Technical training involves receiving specialised, tailor made exercises from an expert coach to help you overcome vocal challenges to improve your vocal skills. As opposed to warm ups, with technical training you will work on increasingly complicated skills required to master the craft. The exercises focus on flexibility, agility, power and stamina.

In Conclusion

Warm-ups proceed any vocal work you will do, but it is not enough for you to increase your skills. Technical training improves singing skills and progresses you towards mastering you voice.

Each lesson with Karen starts with a short warm-up, followed by technical training, after which you will work on your repertoire.
